The University of Cumbria was formally established in August 2007 as an amalgamation of St. Martin's College Lancaster , the Cumbria Institute of the Arts and institutions of the University of Central Lancashire . To this end, St. Martin's College in Lancaster, which previously awarded degrees under the supervision of the University of Lancaster , had applied for stand-alone rights to confer university degrees, which were granted in January 2007 by the Privy Council .

The university's main office is in Carlisle . University facilities are also originally located in Penrith in the former University of Central Lancashire facilities, in Lancaster in the former facilities of St. Martin's College Lancaster and Ambleside , and in London in the Tower Hamlets district . In 2009 it was decided to shut down the facilities in Ambleside from summer 2010 due to financial problems. The campus in Ambleside reopened for the 2013 winter semester. The university plans to increase the attractiveness of Ambleside for students through further renovations.

The university trains u. a. in the fields of law , computer science , economics and forestry . The university is also active in teacher training and offers adult education opportunities in Penrith and Carlisle.
