The Heriot-Watt University (HWU) is one of three in the Scottish capital Edinburgh -based universities. It emerged from the School of Arts of Edinburgh founded in 1821 , which began as a technical school, making it the world's first technical college. It received university status in 1966. Originally located in the center of Edinburgh, the main campus is now in the Riccarton district in the countryside, where the university has been gradually relocating since 1971. Offshoots are the Scottish Border Campus (previously Scottish College of Textiles) in Galashiels , the International Center for Island Technology (ICIT) in Stromness on the Orkney Islands (as part of the Institute for Petroleum Technology) and since 2006 an offshoot in Dubai (Heriot- Watt University Dubai). In February 2015, the university opened another campus in Putrajaya , Malaysia .

The university is named after the inventor of the steam engine James Watt and George Heriot , a 16th century jeweler, philanthropist and banker of King James I (England) . The name Watt came into the name of the university as early as 1852, from 1885 it was called "Heriot Watt College". From 1869 women were also allowed.

In 2013/2014 the university had 8,775 students (with correspondence courses, affiliated partner institutions and branches in Dubai and Malaysia 28,875). More than a third of the face-to-face students at the locations in Scotland come from abroad.

Affiliated is the Edinburgh Business School , which also has an extensive distance learning program.

The engineer Richard Williams has been the principal and vice chancellor and thus head of the university since 2015 . The Scottish-born Canadian- based mining engineer Robert Buchan was appointed chancellor with largely representative duties .
