history

The history of Alloa Tower is divided into several phases. The oldest known building is a fortified building from the early 14th century at this location, but little has been known about it. In the middle of the century this was expanded to a three-story building with a basement or dungeon. A further increase to four or five floors was made in the 15th century. The first tower house, on which the structure that is preserved today is based, was built in 1497. It is a five-story building with a cellar or dungeon. In the late 16th century, the building was redesigned and was probably accessible from this point on both at ground level and on the first floor. At the beginning of the 18th century a mansion was built next to it and from then on the residential tower was only used as an auxiliary building. In the course of this expansion by John Erskine, 24th Earl of Mar , the residential tower was also extensively redesigned. A fire devastated the mansion in 1800 and the Alloa Tower was inhabited again until the new mansion was completed in 1838. At the end of the 20th century the tower was restored and reopened in 1997 for the 500th anniversary.
