Barry Venison (born August 16, 1964 in Consett , England ) is a former English football player who was under contract with AFC Sunderland , Liverpool FC , Newcastle United , Galatasaray Istanbul and Southampton FC during his professional career .

Career

Sunderland AFC

Venison began his club career in his native North East England with Sunderland AFC, where he set the record for being the youngest captain of a team in the Wembley Cup finals at the age of 20. He also led his team during the 1985 League Cup final against Norwich City , which they lost 1-0.

Venison made his Sunderland AFC debut at the age of 17 in a 2-0 away loss in a league game to Notts County . In his first season with the club, he ran in 20 league games and scored one goal. Due to his consistently good performances, he became one of the team's key players in the following seasons.

At the end of the 1984/85 season, the club was relegated to the second division . After relegation Venison remained loyal to his club, but made a transfer request after losing promotion to the first division. Venison sent every club that was represented in the first division a request whether they were interested in him. Then the then Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish acted the fastest and insisted on signing Venison. Liverpool FC bought Venison for £ 200,000. He was to replace Mark Lawrenson , who retired at the end of the season.

Liverpool FC

Venison made his debut for the Reds on August 16, 1986 in the traditional season opener through the FA Community Shield . Liverpool FC faced derby rivals Everton , against whom they had won all games in the league and in the cup tournament last season. The game ended in a 1-1 draw and the Community Shield Cup was split. During his first season at Liverpool FC, Venison was used in 33 of 42 league games.

In the same season, the team lost in the League Cup to Arsenal and lost the chance of the league title when they finished the season in second place after a loss to rivals Everton.

In the 1987/88 season, Liverpool won the championship with only two defeats during the entire season. Venison only played 18 times for Liverpool this season. The reason for this was that Kenny Dalglish was forced by the injury of Gary Ablett to perform a rotation, after which Venison no longer fit into the game system.

The 1988/89 season was the season in which Venison scored his first goal for the team. He scored the goal in a 4-1 win over Nottingham Forest in the quarter-finals of the Centenary Trophy. Venison ran in other games during the season, but not in the starting line-up. He was substituted on mainly in the second half.

In the 1989/1990 season, Venison won the league with Liverpool for the 18th time in the club's history. Venison was used 25 times this season. In the following season, Venison was only used 14 times in all competitions.

His only goal in a league game scored Venison on March 31, 1992 in a 4-0 win over Notts County . During this season, Venison was rarely used and ended his career at Liverpool with 109 appearances in the league and one goal.

Newcastle United

In June, exactly after six years at Liverpool FC, Venison returned to North East England, but not to AFC Southampton, but to rival Newcastle United , who wanted to advance under the leadership of former international Kevin Keegan .

Venison made his Newcastle United debut on August 15, 1992 in a 3-2 home win over Southend United . The season started almost perfectly for Venison and his team, with an 11-game winning streak. The winning streak ended with a 1-0 loss to Grimsby Town . Keegan had introduced an exciting offensive and aggressively defending game system in which Venison, through his return to old form, became one of the key players and the captain of the team. At the end of the season, the club was successfully promoted to the first division.

Venison remained an important part of the Newcastle United side's defense and made a huge contribution to it when they finished third in the 1993/94 season in the Premier League , enough to bring the club back for the first time since 1970 received the license to participate in the UEFA Cup .

Venison lost his captaincy on the team when he was caught in a bar after the club's curfew.

in the season 1994/95 Venison was used 25 times. The team finished the first half of the season in first place, but they slipped to sixth place in the second half of the season due to poorer performance and thus ended the season.

In 1994, Terry Venables surprisingly called Venison into the national team and made his debut for the national team in a friendly against the USA at the age of 30 . His second and last international match he played on March 29, 1995 in a friendly against Uruguay , which ended in a goalless draw.

Galatasaray Istanbul

After the end of the 1994/95 season, Graeme Souness signed a few more British players with Venison for Galatasaray Istanbul. Venison was signed for £ 750,000 but only appeared in eight games and left the club after just half a season.

Southampton FC

After only 5 months at Galatasaray Istanbul, Venison changed clubs again and signed with Southampton FC. Here he was also committed by Graeme Souness . The transfer fee was £ 850,000. He ran for the team in 27 league games. The team managed to stay in the first division through the goal difference and reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

In the 1996/97 season he played two more games for the team and ended his career at the age of 32 after a back injury.

After a career as a soccer player

After his active football career, Venison appeared in various sports programs as a commentator; including first for Sky Sports and later, from 1997 to 2002, for ITV . Furthermore, after the end of his career, he examined various philosophies and religions, including Buddhism, and practiced or still practices Vedanta , meditation and yoga today .

In the early 2000s, Venison, in collaboration with fellow American footballer Brad Friedel, launched an online auction website for sports memorabilia. The company bid4sport.com was initially a charitable company and raised money for charity. Shortly before he moved to the United States with his family , he sold his company, which his wife also worked for. It still exists today (as of 2018).

In 2001 he starred in Steve Barron's film Mike Bassett: England Manager and played himself in it.

Venison currently lives (as of 2018) in Southern California , where he emigrated with his wife Julie, son Max and daughter Jade in 2003. While still at ITV, he had a residence in Florida and was visiting California during that time when he decided to settle here. The family initially settled in Laguna Beach (2003 to 2010) and moved to Los Angeles in 2010 .

In California, he specialized in real estate trading after he and his wife had already worked in the real estate sector in England and bought his first house with her at the age of 18. Through his friend Oliver Wyss , who emigrated from Switzerland to California in 1994 and who, after a short professional career, was mainly committed to the Californian youth football sector, he joined the Orange County Blues football franchise and played in the second-rate North American United Soccer League (USL) in connection. Wyss had been the head coach of the club since the end of 2014 and asked Venison, after he had retired from football for around 12 years, for help in running the franchise. Venison subsequently appeared as technical director of Orange County Blues from 2015, although, as he admitted in an interview with The Daily Telegraph , he hadn't even heard from the USL in February 2015. With the franchise he won the Game 2015 the Western Conference of the USL, but retired in the season final play-offs at an early stage in the Conference Semifinals against LA Galaxy II from. In August 2016, after the departure of his friend Oliver Wyss, he was appointed the new head coach of the franchise, but only held this position for a few weeks, as a new owner of the franchise was already known at the time of the takeover, who would no longer consider Venison. He retained his position as technical director until the new owner took over the franchise.
