Southern California ( English Southern California or " SoCal " for short ) is the southern part of the US state California . Geographically, the border between Northern and Southern California is traditionally marked by the Tehachapi Mountains . Politically, Southern California is made up of the following eight counties : Imperial , Los Angeles , Orange , Riverside , San Bernardino , San Diego , Santa Barbara and Ventura . More than two-thirds of California's residents live in Southern California, concentrated in the coastal strip.

The hinterland consists largely of deserts and semi-deserts and is largely unpopulated. Therefore, gigantic complexes of warehouses were established in the Inland Empire , through which practically all imported goods from Asia are channeled to the USA. Otherwise there are large nature reserves and military facilities in the hinterland. Exceptions are places with drinking water such as Palm Springs and the Imperial Valley .

In southern California are the major cities of Los Angeles and San Diego . Southern California is a major shipping and air travel hub, a popular travel destination, and the hub of the US ( Hollywood ) film industry .

South of the border with Mexico are the Mexican states of Baja California and Baja California Sur in the geographic region Baja California .
