San Diego County is a county in the US state of California . The county seat is in San Diego .

The county covers an area of 11,721 km² . The San Diego River flows through the county . The southern end of the county already forms the border with Mexico .
history
The county's roots go back to the time when the Misión San Diego de Alcalá was founded there in 1769. San Diego County was one of the earliest counties in California. It was created in 1850 when the state was founded. Parts of the county were later given to Riverside County in 1893 and Imperial County in 1907.
The countyname comes from San Diego Bay , a bay that Sebastián Vizcaíno named in 1602 after the Franciscan layman San Diego de Alcalá de Henares , whose name was emblazoned on the flagship.

As of the 2000 census, the population of San Diego County was 2,813,833. There were 994,677 households and 663,449 families. The population density was 259 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 66.52% White, 5.74% African American, 0.86% Native American, 8.88% Asian, 0.48% Pacific Islander, and 12.82% other races Groups; 4.69% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 26.69% of the population.
33.90% of the 994,677 households had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 50.70% were married couples living together, 11.60% were single mothers. 33.30% were not families. 24.20% were single households and 7.90% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.73 and the average family size was 3.29 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.70% residents under 18 years of age, 11.30% between 18 and 24 years of age, 32.00% between 25 and 44 years of age, 19.80% between 45 and 64 years of age 11.20% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 101.20 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 99.70 males.
The median income for a household in the 47,067 USD , and the median income for a family was 53,438 USD. Males had a median income of $ 36,952 versus $ 30,356 for females. The per capita income was $ 22,926. 12.40% percent of the population and 8.90% of families are below the poverty line. 16.50% of them were under 18 years of age and 6.80% were 65 years of age or older.
