history

The name of the place is due to the groundwater source that is located there. The tribes of the Kumeyaay Indians lived there for several millennia before they were driven out by Spanish conquerors. They initially called the place El aguaje de San Jorge , in English St. George's Spring and used the area for cattle breeding.

In 1863, San Diego Judge Augustus S. Ensworth filed a claim for 160 acres , approximately 650,000 square meters, which included the water source. The farm and the adobe house that he had built there were sold to Rufus King Porter and finally to the historian Hubert Howe Bancroft in the course of the following decades. The buildings that have survived to this day are listed as National Historic Landmarks as important places in American history .
