Jamul ( / hɑːˈmuːl / ) is a city in San Diego County in the US state of California . Almost 6,200 people live in an area of ​​almost 44 square kilometers.

Jamul is located in the south of the state of California in the southwest of the United States, about 15 kilometers from the southern border with Mexico and 23 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean in the west. The Cleveland National Forest covers 1,900 square kilometers and extends about seven kilometers to the east .

Nearby cities include Chula Vista (3 km south), El Cajon (5 km north), La Mesa (7 km northwest) and National City (13 km southwest). The next larger city is San Diego, about ten kilometers to the west, with over 1.3 million inhabitants .

history

Jamul was originally on Mexican soil, but was granted to the last Californian governor, Pío Pico , by Mexican governor Manuel Victoria in 1831 . In 1837, the ranch established there was attacked by the Diegueño Indians , killing several defenders and kidnapping two women. As a result, the country became orphaned and was repeatedly inhabited by illegal settlers, who, however, were also driven out by the Indians. Since 1854 it has been inhabited by Henry Stanton Burton, the leader of the area's first mission .

As a result, the ranch often changed hands or was used as collateral for mortgages.

The 2010 census showed a population of 6163, divided between 1906 households and 1646 families. The population density was 141 people per square kilometer. 86.0% of the population were white, 4.8% Pacific islanders, 2.4% Asian, 2.1% black and 0.5% Native American. 4.8% were of a different ethnicity, 4.2% had two or more races, and 19.3% were Hispanics or Latin Americans of any ethnicity. For every 100 women there were 101 men. The average age was 44.4 years.

The population has risen since the 2000 census , from 5920 originally. At that time, the per capita income was just under 32,500 US dollars, which means that less than 9% of the population lived below the poverty line.
