I-8 was previously labeled US Highway 80 . The upgrade to the interstate was decided in 1957 and implemented in 1964. The section from Sunset Cliff Boulevard to Rosecrans Avenue was not changed until 1969, as the San Diego Freeway , part of Interstate 5 , was completed at the same time . Before Interstate 8, Rosecrans Avenue was known as California State Route 209 .

California

The interstate begins in San Diego on Sunset Cliff Boulevard and after 277 km (172 mi) it reaches the Arizona border and is known as the Border Friendship Route . Much of the interstate in the Imperial Valley runs below sea level. For example, the lowest point of all interstates on the New River is near Seeley at −16 m (−52 ft). The I-8 in Mountain Springs has one of the widest median strips in the interstate highway system with in places more than one and a half miles.

Eastern end of I-8

Arizona

From the California border, the interstate leads to Interstate 10 at Casa Grande . The I-8 meet in Yuma on the US Highway 95 . East of Yuma, a lane runs west on the left side of the median for about three miles.
