Route of Interstate 88

Interstate 88 is part of the US Interstate Highway System . The freeway runs from the Quad Cities area on the Mississippi to the Chicago metropolitan area . As a junction from Interstate 80 , it crosses northern Illinois and represents an alternative route to I-80, which runs parallel further south.

history

When the nationwide speed limit of 55 mph (88 km / h) was first relaxed in the 1980s, states were only allowed to increase the speed limit to 65 mph on interstate highways. Since the Illinois State Route 88 was developed as a motorway in the form of a toll road, it had to be re-designated as an interstate highway in order to be covered by the higher speed regulation.
