Downers Grove is a village in DuPage County in the US -amerikanischen State Illinois with 47,833 inhabitants in 2010 .
geography
The city is located around 30 km west of Chicago . It is 41 ° 47 '41.29 "N latitude and 88 ° 1' 0.98" W longitude. According to the United States Census Bureau , the area has a size of 14.3 mi 2 , which is 37.2 km 2 . Only 0.07% of this is water. Downers Grove is bordered by the parishes of Darien, Lisle, Oak Brook, Lombard, Woodridge , and Westmont.
history
The place was founded in 1832 by the preacher Pierce Downer. He was his son Stephen, one on construction of the first Chicago lighthouse involved Steinmetz , from the state of New York to Illinois followed. He claimed 160 acres of land (equivalent to about 65 hectares ) and set up a dairy farm. More settlers followed in the course of the following years and in 1863 the first subdivision was established. With the opening of the Aurora - Chicago railway line in 1864, the place was also accessible by rail; the further growth of the city was mainly concentrated in the areas surrounding the three train stations ( Main Street , Belmont and East Grove ). In 1873 the parish was formally incorporated under the name Village of Downers Grove .
Polish immigrants from Gostyń built the city's first migrant quarter north of East Grove Station (today: Fairview Avenue Station ); the St. Mary of Gostyn Church located there is the oldest Roman Catholic church in the city.
In 1892, Chicago entrepreneurs, including Marshall Field , built the first nine-hole golf course west of the Appalachian Mountains north of Belmont Station (today: Downers Grove Golf Club ).
Proximity to Chicago, an early mail order center in the United States, resulted in Downers Grove becoming a center of Sears Modern Homes - prefabricated houses that Sears, Roebuck & Co. cataloged mail order from 1908 to 1940 .
In 1928 the Tivoli Theater was built , one of the first cinemas in the country to be specially built for the presentation of sound films . It should not be confused with the Chicago theater of the same name, which was demolished in the 1960s .
economy
Downers Grove is the headquarters of several large national and international companies, including the HAVI Group (one of the largest suppliers to McDonald's), Dover Corporation (mechanical engineering) and the FTD Group (Florist's Transworld Delivery, the parent company of Fleurop / Interflora). The IT industry association CompTIA is also based here. The consumer goods manufacturer Sara Lee was based in Downers Grove until it was dissolved.
