Sandi Morris (born July 8, 1992 in Downers Grove ) is an American pole vaulter . She is the reigning indoor world champion in pole vault (2018).

Career

Starting for the University of Arkansas , she became NCAA hall champion in 2015 .

At the US Championships in 2015, she qualified second for the World Championships in Beijing . On July 18, she rose in Heusden-Zolder to a height of 4.76 m, within just one year she improved her best by 21 cm. She finished her good season with 4.70 m and a fourth place at the World Championships.

At the indoor world championships in 2016 , she finished second behind her compatriot Jennifer Suhr with a jump of 4.85 m . On July 23, 2016, she set a new national record in Houston with 4.93 m outdoors, after having already jumped 4.95 m indoors on March 12 of the same year. With that she moved up to second place in the world best list behind the world record holder Jelena Isinbayeva .

Olympic Games 2016

With a jumped height of 4.85 m, she won the silver medal at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro behind the Greek Ekaterini Stefanidi , who had fewer failed attempts at the same height.

On September 9, 2016, at the Diamond League Meeting in Brussels, she became the second woman after Jelena Isinbayeva to jump over 5.00 m outdoors. With that she improved her best performance by 24 centimeters compared to the previous year and within two years even by 45 cm, an increase in performance that no top athlete had ever achieved in this discipline.

At the 2017 World Championships in London , Morris won the silver medal with a jumped height of 4.75 m behind Ekaterini Stefanidi and in front of the tied Robeilys Peinado and Yarisley Silva .

With a new championship record of 4.95 m, she won the gold medal at the 2018 World Indoor Championships in Birmingham ahead of Anselika Sidorova and Stefanidi .

At the 2019 World Championships , there was another three-way battle between Morris, Sidorova and Stefanidi. With 4.90 m she only had to admit defeat Sidorowa and won the silver medal like two years ago.
