Strömsborg is an island in the Stockholm district of Gamla stan in Norrström in Sweden .

The circular archipelago measures around 50 meters in diameter and has an area of 0.2  hectares . It is located north of Gamla stan between the busy bridges Vasabron in the east and Centralbron in the west. The only access to the island is via the Strömsborgsbron bridge , which leads east from Strömsborg to Vasabron.

history

Originally the island was called Stenkär. In 1740, the Stockholm merchant Berge Olofson Ström (1688–1762) acquired the island, which had been uninhabited until then, and built a building reminiscent of a castle on it. The current name Strömsborg goes back to this fact. Today the island is built on with a palatial building. It was built between 1895 and 1897 and rebuilt in 1929/30 by the architect Ragnar Östberg .

The building is now home to the International IDEA and the Baltic Sea Council .
