Centralbron ( German  Central Bridge ) is one of the most important road links in the center of the Swedish capital Stockholm . It connects the districts of Norrmalm and Södermalm via the islands of Gamla Stan (old town) and Riddarholmen . It consists of two sections, the north bridge from the main train station to Gamla Stan and the south bridge from Gamla Stan to the Söderledstunneln .

The Centralbron is about 1200 meters long and leads over the Söderström and the Riddarfjärden . The capacity of the bridge is around 130,000 vehicles per day. On Gamla Stan, the bridge runs in close proximity to many historic buildings, such as Riddarholm Church and Riddarhuset .

history

The first plans for a bridge called "Centralbron" were made in the first decade of the 20th century. Many plans were discarded, the final plan was made in 1928 to build the bridge. In the 1930s, the need for a new bridge to run west of Gamla Stan grew. The junction in the south of Slussen and Västerbron were opened in 1935.

Railway bridge

The railway bridge, consisting of a southern and a northern bridge ( Södra och Norra järnvägsbron ), runs parallel to the vehicle bridge and leads to Stockholm Central Station . Over the years the capacity of the railway bridge was exhausted and thought was given to widening it to include another track, but this met with criticism from the residents because they saw the historical image of the city changed to the detriment. For this reason, it was decided to build a Citybanan railway tunnel , which went into operation on July 10, 2017. This increases the train capacity. The cost was 17 billion Swedish kronor .

North bridge

Construction began on the north bridge in 1961 and was opened on September 3, 1967. It is 246 meters long and 22.3 meters ready. At the same height it connects to the south bridge, in the north it makes a sharp bend and runs over the tracks of Stockholm Central Station and then continues as a normal road into the Blekholm Tunnel , which runs west of the Central Station.

Until the mid-1960s, the bridge at the main train station ran at street level, which is why there was a restricted level crossing just in front of the train station, but where there were regular long traffic jams. For this reason, the bridge was elevated and ran from then on above the tracks, which greatly improved the flow of traffic.

South bridge

The bridge was actually supposed to be built in the 1930s, but the Second World War delayed the whole project, so construction did not begin until 1950. Finally, the south bridge was inaugurated on June 16, 1959. It is 189 meters long and 21.3 meters wide. At the southern end it joins the Söderledstunneln, which opened in 1991 .
