Riddarhuset was built between 1641 and 1674 as a meeting place for the Swedish nobility . It is located in Stockholm's old town ( Gamla stan ) and is the seat of the Swedish knight's house .

Various architects were responsible for the building during the construction period . The French architect Simon de la Vallée made the start . After that, construction was continued by the German stonemason Heinrich Wilhelm and the Dutchman Justus Vingboons . The latter is said to have had the decisive influence on the design. After his return to Holland, Simon's son, Jean de la Vallée , completed the construction.

Since then, the building has been rebuilt several times both inside and outside. The biggest change came in 1870 when the house got free-standing wings designed by the architect Adolf W. Edelsvärd .

The Riddarhuset is largely built in the style of Dutch classicism . There are interesting interiors from the 17th century and an elaborate staircase hall. The knight's house used to be the Swedish equivalent of the English upper house .

Today the building is Sweden's most exclusive social club and belongs to around two thousand noble families, whose coats of arms are painted on metal shields and hung on the walls of the great hall. Festivals, concerts and similar events take place here.

Since 1869, the Swedish nobility has met every third year in the knight's house for a festive gathering.
