history

The station concourse

The architect of the station building was the chief architect of the Statens Järnvägars arkitektkontor ( German  architectural office of the State Railways) Adolf Wilhelm Edelsvärd . The station was opened on July 18, 1871 and initially had five tracks, now it has 18 platform tracks. Stockholm Centralen is used by around 410,000 visitors every day.

Of the 170,000 daily train passengers, around 105,000 are commuters who mainly use the local trains operated by the SJ railway company and Pendeltåg , a type of S-Bahn . Another 25,000 take the Arlanda Express to Stockholm / Arlanda Airport . About 40,000 passengers use the long-distance connections.

Since 1957, the T-Centralen underground station has been located east of the station between Vasagatan, Klarabergsgatan and Sergels Tor, with six tracks, on which the seven lines of the Stockholm Tunnelbana , the underground, stop. The underground station is connected to the long-distance train station via a connecting tunnel and is frequented by around 183,900 passengers every day (number of boarding passengers on a winter working day in 2015).

The station was expanded and modernized in 2012, adding some new shops in the basement. In addition, a 25 percent reduction in energy consumption and certification as a green building was achieved.

In order to counteract capacity bottlenecks on the Stockholm södra - Stockholm C route, a new railway tunnel, the so-called Citybanan tunnel, was built by July 2017 . Since then, the Pendeltåg trains have been running through the tunnel and no longer stop in Stockholm C, but in the newly built Stockholm City tunnel station, which is located under the T-Centralen subway junction. The tunnel station comprises four tracks in one-way operation on two central platforms with platform screen doors and is connected to both T-Centralen and the long-distance train station via escalators and elevators.

From top to bottom, the rather complex building consists of the following nine levels:

  • Upper floor: some shops, exit to the Klarabergsviadukt and city terminals (buses)
  • Station concourse (shops, restaurants, SJ counter), tracks 1–8, 10, 11–19, exit to Vasagatan: taxi, buses. Access to platforms 11-19 is via the upper or lower floor.
  • Basement : shops, lockers, SL customer center, connecting corridor to the tunnel bana and city terminals
  • 8.5 m deep: Tunnelbana : green line towards Odenplan, red line towards Liljeholmen
  • 14 m deep: Tunnelbana: green line towards Slussen , red line towards Östermalmstorg
  • Connecting corridor "Blå gången"
  • 30 m deep: Tunnelbana: blue line
  • Mezzanine
  • 40 m deep: Citybanan

The term “Centralstation” only refers to the top three levels. The following four belong to " T-Centralen " and the last two to " Station Stockholm City ". The upper three levels can be entered without a ticket, for the others one of the barriers must be passed.
