International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance

The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance ( International IDEA ; German, non-official translation: International Institute for the Promotion of Democracy and Democratic Participation) is an intergovernmental organization with the aim of promoting democracy worldwide.

The International IDEA describes it as its task to support sustainable democratic change worldwide. It is the only intergovernmental organization that has this as its sole mandate. To this end, the organization is primarily active in creating and disseminating specialized knowledge. This includes the areas of electoral processes, constitution, political participation and representation, as well as democracy and development and the relationship between democracy and gender, diversity, conflict situations and security.

The organization has a total of 29 full members (as of June 2016):

Japan has official observer status.

The headquarters of International IDEA is on Strömsborg in Stockholm , Sweden , but the organization has offices worldwide, including the United Nations in New York, the European Union in Brussels, and regional offices in Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Pacific.
