IAAF World Indoor Championships
The IAAF World Indoor Championships (official name World Athletics Indoor Championships ) are competitions that the athletics world governing body are performed in halls. They first took place in Paris in 1985, but at that time they were still called World Indoor Games. Since 1987 they have been officially called the World Championships. In 2004, the rhythm of the event was changed in order not to compete with the World Athletics Championships held in the open air up to then in the same year . On January 29, 2020, the World Athletics Federation decided to postpone the event to 2021, as the spread of illnesses caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in China and abroad was at a worrying level despite immense efforts.
Competitions
The running competitions take place on 200-meter lanes with six individual lanes. Due to the limited space, there are no throwing disciplines with the exception of the shot put .
There have been various changes in the competition program over the years: The 4 x 400 meter relay was introduced in 1991 for both men and women. In that year, the triple jump for women was also included in the program, initially for the time being and finally from 1993.
The walking competitions took place for the last time in 1993; that was the only time that a 1600 meter relay was held. The women's pole vault was first held in 1997, two years before its outdoor premiere.
At the 2004 World Championships, the 200-meter run was on the program for the last time . The reason for this is that the outcome of the races became too predictable due to the tight corners. Athletes who had to run on the narrow inner lanes usually had no chance of winning the race.
