The 15th World Indoor Athletics Championships in 2014 were awarded to the Polish city of Sopot on the Baltic Sea . This was announced on November 11, 2011 at the IAAF World Athletics Gala in Monte Carlo . Sopot was the only remaining applicant for the event after the Croatian capital Zagreb refused to apply for financial reasons.
The venue was the Ergo Arena , which opened in 2010 and stands directly on the city limits between the two tri-cities Sopot and Gdansk .

As at the last World Indoor Championships in 2012 in Istanbul, Ryan Whiting won with the only 22-meter kick in front of David Storl. Tomasz Majewski was unable to defend his bronze medal because New Zealander Tomas Walsh surprisingly pushed him to fourth place in the last round.
