Kai Kazmirek (born January 28, 1991 in Torgau ) is a German athlete who competes in the decathlon . The German champion from 2012 starts for the LG Rhein-Wied and is trained by Jörg Roos. He is a police commissioner in the sports promotion group of the Rhineland-Palatinate police. He studies at the German Sport University Cologne .

Athletic career

Kazmirek's strengths are in jumping and sprinting. For example, in 2008 he was German B youth champion in high jump and in 2009 third in the A youth championships in long jump . He achieved his first international successes in the decathlon in the U20 age group. At the Junior European Championships 2009 in Novi Sad he won the bronze medal, at the Junior World Championships 2010 in Moncton, he finished sixth.

In 2012 Kazmirek became German champion in the decathlon. In the same year he won the Thorpe Cup with the German team . With 8130 points he exceeded the 8000 point mark for the first time. At the U23 European Championships in Tampere in 2013 , he secured the title with a personal best of 8366 points.

In 2014 Kazmirek won the German championships in indoor heptathlon. Then the World Athletics Federation enabled him to take part in the World Indoor Championships in Sopot by wildcard . There he finished sixth with 6173 points. With Frank Busemann and André Niklaus , only two German all-rounders had ever achieved a higher number of points in this discipline. In the same year he increased his personal best at the Götzis all- around meeting to 8471 points. At the 2014 European Championships in Zurich , he was in the lead until the pole vault , but ended up only in sixth place.

In May 2015 he won the meeting in Götzis with 8462 points. At the World Championships in Beijing , he finished sixth with 8448 points.

In 2016 Kazmirek finished third in Götzis with 8318 points and second at the Ratingen all- around meeting with 8323 points. At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , he achieved a new personal best with 8580 points and took fourth place.

At the 2017 World Championships in London , Kazmirek was third with 8488 points. Only the new world champion Kevin Mayer (8786 points) from France and Kazmirek's team-mate Rico Freimuth (8564) were better .

In 2018 Kazmirek won the title at the German Indoor Championships with the 4 x 200 meter relay of the LG Rhein-Wied and came in 3rd place in the long jump. At the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham , he finished fourth in the heptathlon and achieved a new personal best with 6238 points. Kazmirek was nominated by the DLV for the home European championships in Berlin, but had to cancel shortly before due to injury.

Kai Kazmirek is 1.90 meters tall and his competition weight is 88 kilograms.
