Rico Freimuth (born March 14, 1988 in Potsdam ) is a German decathlete .

Life

Rico Freimuth comes from a sporty family. His father Uwe Freimuth was fourth in the decathlon world championship in 1983 and has a best performance of 8792 points, his mother Anke Tröger was Junior European Champion in the heptathlon in 1981 and his uncle Jörg Freimuth won the 1980 Olympic bronze in high jump .

In 2007 Freimuth won the bronze medal at the Junior European Championships in Hengelo with 7524 points. In 2009 he increased his best performance to 7689 points, in 2010 he reached 7826 points. In 2011 he exceeded the 8000 point mark for the first time with 8158 points at the all-around meeting Götzis , one and a half months later Freimuth qualified in Ratingen with 8287 points for the World Championships in Daegu , but retired there after the long jump. In 2012, Freimuth increased to 8,322 points in Götzis, surpassing the norm for the Olympic Games in London , where he was sixth with 8,320 points. At the World Championships in Moscow in 2013 , he reached seventh place with 8382 points. In 2015 he won the bronze medal at the World Championships in Beijing with a personal best of 8561 points. In 2017 he finished second behind Kevin Mayer at the World Championships in London with 8564 points .

In 2018 Freimuth felt burned out, ended the season prematurely and did not take part in the European Championships in Berlin.

Rico Freimuth started between 2005 and 2013 for the Halle Athletics Friends and since 2014 for SV Halle . He trains with Wolfgang Kühne , who was GDR runner-up in the decathlon in 1979. Freimuth is a sports soldier in the Bundeswehr sports promotion group in Frankenberg, Saxony .

Freimuth is 1.96 meters tall, his competition weight is 94 kilograms.

Football career

Freimuth, who started his football career at Meißner SV 08 at the age of 5 , played for the club until he was 14 years old until he ended his career in athletics. In summer 2018 he returned to football and has been playing for 1. FC Romonta Amsdorf in the Association League Saxony-Anhalt since July 2018 .

  • In 2018, Freimuth was named Sportsman of the Year by his hometown Halle (Saale) in mid-January .
