Starting position

The top favorite for this decathlon was the American Ashton Eaton. He had won the major international competitions in recent years. He was world champion in 2013 and Olympic champion in 2012 . He also held the current world record . His strongest competitors were his compatriot Trey Hardee - world champion in 2011 / Olympic second in 2012 - and the Canadian Damian Warner - world championship third in 2013 / Olympic fifth in 2012. Other favorites included the German vice world champion from 2013 Michael Schrader, the Ukrainian vice European champion from 2012 Oleksiy Kasyanov and the two-time European Championship -Third - 2012/ 2014 - Ilya Schkurenjow from Russia.

Summary

Eaton dominated this competition right from the start and ran the 100 meters with 10.23 s, the second fastest time ever in a decathlon. His constant pursuer, Warner, never came dangerously close. Hardee injured himself in the long jump and did not take up the high jump after the shot put . So it was a chasing group that also included all three German athletes who fought for the bronze medal. Eaton closed the first day of the competition with another bang. With 45.00 s over the 400 meters , he was faster than ever and no other decathlete in a competition.

As the day before, the decathlon continued in very hot and sunny weather. Hardly anything changed in the positions in the front seats either. Eaton remained dominant at the top. Warner was still second by a clear margin. Behind them, the chasing group made up of the three Germans Rico Freimuth, Kai Kazmirek and Schrader, Schkurenjow, the Algerian Larbi Bourrada, who was active again after his doping ban, the young Kurt Felix from Grenada and Kasjanow, who became somewhat weaker at the end of the ten disciplines, established themselves.

After continuing to perform well, Eaton was above his interim world record after the javelin throw . In an ambitious 1,500 meter run , in which Freimuth and Schkurenjow fought for third place and for Eaton for the world record, the American improved his 2012 best by six points to 9045 points. Schkurenjow shortened Freimuth's lead from almost 100 points to 23 points, but could no longer dispute the bronze medal. Warner reached a new Canadian record and finished second, while Bourrada finished fifth with a new African record.
