initial situation

As is almost always the case with such large championships, it was not easy for the marathon to find favorite positions. Too seldom can the athletes run this distance because otherwise the form is lost. In addition, the focus for the season highlight is not for all marathon stars on the world championships, but often also on the major city marathons such as London, Berlin, New York, etc. One of the favorites here in Beijing was definitely the defending champion and 2012 Olympic champion Stephen Kiprotich from Uganda , the Ethiopian Vice World Champion Lelisa Desisa and his compatriot Yemane Tsegay, eighth of the last world championships. Another group of runners with good prospects was the Italian European Champion Daniele Meucci.

Given the difficult climatic conditions of Beijing with its high levels of air pollution, no fast race was to be expected. A larger field, with Shumi Dechasa from Bahrain at the top, stayed together for a long time. The individual 5 km sections were covered between fifteen and a half to sixteen minutes up to thirty kilometers, which was expected to be moderate. Shortly before twenty kilometers, Meucci took the lead and moved slightly away from the field. His compatriot Ruggero Pertile followed two seconds behind, another four seconds behind was a group of nineteen.

After 25 kilometers, Tsepo Ramonene from Lesotho took the initiative and set himself a few meters away from his rivals, but without increasing the pace. At thirty kilometers he had worked out a lead of a little more than ten seconds over Pertile and another six seconds on what was now a group of twelve. The distance then shrank again and at the same time the field of pursuit fell more and more apart. Ghirmay Ghebreslassie from Eritrea came closer and closer to the leader, while Tsegay and Munyo Mutai from Uganda were also only a little behind. Just a little more than twenty seconds behind Ramonene, a group of Desisa, Kiprotich and Jackson Kiprop, also from Uganda, followed. Pertile and Amanuel Mesel from Eritrea were a good thirty seconds behind. That was the status at kilometer 35.

Now the decisive phase began. Ramonene could no longer keep the pace while his pursuers accelerated. Ghebreslassie and Tsegay got into the race particularly well. At forty kilometers, the Eritrean was eight seconds ahead of the Ethiopian. Thirty more seconds behind, Mutai was still doing well in the battle for the medals. The closest pursuers Dechasa, Desisa, Pertile and Kiprotich, on the other hand, were already more than one and a half minutes behind. Ramonene had fallen further behind.

The order at the top did not change until the finish line. Ghirmay Ghebreslassie became world champion with a lead of forty seconds over Yemane Tsegay. Munyo Mutai won bronze twelve seconds behind Tsegay. Fourth place went to Ruggero Pertile, who was 57 seconds short of the medal. Shumi Dechasa was fifth ahead of Stephen Kiprotich and Lelisa Desisa in seventh. At the same time as Desisa, Daniele Meucci crossed the finish line in eighth ahead of Amanuel Mesel and Jackson Kiprop.
