Dennis Kipruto Kimetto (also Dennis Kipruto Koech ; born January 22, 1984 ) is a Kenyan long-distance runner who specializes in road running and lives in Kapngetuny. With 2:02:57 hours until 2018, he held the world record in the marathon that he set at the 2014 Berlin Marathon .

Career

Dennis Kimetto grew up in Kapngetuny with four brothers and three sisters. He worked on his parents' farm before starting running at the age of 24 at the invitation of Geoffrey Mutai in the training camp run by Dutch manager Gerard van de Veen.

In 2011 he won the half marathon of the Nairobi Marathon .

When he started abroad for the first time on February 17, 2012, he won the highly endowed RAK half marathon . At the Berlin half marathon he triumphed on April 1, 2012 over the reigning half marathon world champion Wilson Kiprop . His winning time of 59:14 min would have been the best time in the junior world; However, when checking his passport it turned out that it was not made out in the name Koech, under which he had previously competed, but in the name of Dennis Kipruto Kimetto, and that the year of birth there was 1984 and not the year given by management as 1994 was registered. One month later Kimetto won the 25 km from Berlin in the world record time of 1:11:18 h. On September 30th, he also made his marathon debut in Berlin. His time of 2:04:16, with which he finished second, was the second fastest ever in a debut.

In 2013 he won the Tokyo Marathon in 2:06:50 h and the Chicago Marathon , in which he was only 22 seconds over the world record with 2:03:45 h.

After having to abandon the Boston Marathon in April 2014 because of muscle problems in his thigh, he ran the Berlin Marathon in a world record time (2:02:57 hours) and was the first person to run under 2:03:00 hours. His world record lasted until September 16, 2018 and was undercut by Eliud Kipchoge on that day .
