Wilson Kiprop (born July 14, 1987 in Soi , Uasin Gishu District ) is a Kenyan long-distance runner .

Life

He is the oldest of seven siblings. Until 2005 he attended the Kaptebengwet School and used the condition he acquired on the seven-kilometer way to school in school competitions. After leaving school because his family broke up and could no longer afford the school fees , he moved to Eldoret , where he worked as a construction worker for a daily wage of $ 1.5 while continuing his training. At the end of 2007 he won the first prize money in cross-country races, for which he had to borrow the fare. At one of these races, the manager Gianni Demadonna noticed him and signed him after Kiprop had given him the newspaper clippings he had collected about his results.

In 2008 and 2009 he won the Cross della Vallagarina cross-country run . In 2009 he also won the Eurocross in Diekirch and was sixth in the Berlin half marathon . However, an injury sustained while training for his marathon debut soon forced him to sit out for the remainder of the year.

In 2010 he won the Paris half marathon at a temperature of −4 ° C and gusts of wind of 60 km / h and came fifth in the Prague marathon . In the summer he won gold over 10,000 m at the national championships and at the African Athletics Championships in Nairobi . A win at the Lille Half Marathon was followed by the title win at the World Half Marathon Championships in Nanning , where he defeated defending champion Zersenay Tadese in the final sprint.

The following year, an injury prevented him from starting the 10,000 m at the 2011 World Athletics Championships in Daegu. In 2012 he finished fifth in the World's Best 10K and second in the Berlin Half Marathon . By winning the Prefontaine Classic he qualified for the 10,000 meter run of the Olympic Games in London , in which he did not, however, reach the goal.

In 2013 he set a course record at Roma - Ostia with 59:15 minutes and was therefore one of the favorites at the Hamburg Marathon , but dropped out of the race two kilometers from the finish in 5th place. In the further course of the season he won the Giro del Castelbuono , finished second at the Corribianco and broke the course record of the Portugal Half Marathon .

Wilson Kiprop is 1.75 m tall and weighs 60 kg. He is trained by Gabriele Rosa and Renato Canova. With his prize money, he supports his mother and younger siblings, who are still going to school and whose well-being he wants to ensure before he starts a family himself.
