Eurocross

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Eurocross (official name: ING Eurocross ) is a cross-country run that is held annually in Diekirch, Luxembourg, mostly in February . The competition is known for its demanding route including the stairs of a steeper ascent with high steps made from railway sleepers.

The race has been held since 1969 and is organized by the local athletics club Celtic Diekirch . From the introduction of the series in 1999 up to and including 2014, the Eurocross was part of the IAAF Cross Country Permit Meetings of the World Athletics Federation. Since leaving the IAAF Permit Meetings, the main races of Eurocross have not been as top-class as they were when, around 1997, Dieter Baumann took third place behind the Kenyan obstacle course world record holder Bernard Barmasai and the later Belgian European record holder Mohammed Mourhit . Other well-known athletes such as the Belgian half-marathon world champion Vincent Rousseau or the Tendai Chimusasa from Zimbabwe, who was well known in Germany at the time , were also able to enter their names . In addition to Uta Pippig and twice Irina Mikitenko , the winners of the women's race also include the later Olympic champions Gabriela Szabo and Maryam Yusuf Jamal .

Instead, the host club relies on trail runs for amateur athletes. Nonetheless, the event is still part of the Grand Duchy's cross-country series in the children's and youth classes, in which comparative competitions between the athletics federations of Luxembourg and the Rhineland are held.

The ING Group has been a sponsor since 2011 , from 1995 to 1997 the sporting goods manufacturer Reebok gave its name.

In addition to the main races, races for different age and ability groups are offered.
