Maryam Yusuf Jamal ( Arabic مريم يوسف جمال Maryam Yusuf Jamal , DMG Maryam Yūsuf Ǧamāl ; Birth name Zenebech Tola ; * September 16, 1984 in the province of Arsi ) is a Bahraini middle and long distance runner of Ethiopian origin.
Life
Coming from the same village as Haile Gebrselassie and belonging to the Oromo people , she covered 16 km a day on her way to school. Among the five children of her family she was interested in the only for athletics and tried in various disciplines before settling for the Running decided. After she had finished third in the national junior championship in the 1500 meter run in 2001 , a manager invited her to Switzerland . She chose not to return to Ethiopia and applied for political asylum in May 2002 . In 2003 she married her compatriot and trainer Mnashu Taye, who had lived there since 1995.
In 2004 she undercut the norm in the 1500 meter run for the Athens Olympic Games , but was not nominated by the Ethiopian Athletics Federation. After a failed attempt to acquire Swiss citizenship, she and her husband accepted an offer to start for Bahrain in the future, which enabled her to start outside of Switzerland.
On the occasion of the adoption of the Bahraini citizenship, the couple renamed themselves: Zenebech Tola in Maryam Yusuf Jamal and her husband in Tariq Yaqub Hasane. At the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 2005 , she was fifth over 1500 m after she was hindered at the start of the target curve by a Russian competitor. Two weeks earlier, she had set her best time in the 3,000-meter run in Oslo with 8: 28.87 minutes .
On August 27, 2006 she ran her best time over 1500 m in Rieti with 3: 56.18 minutes. The 2007 World Championships in Osaka finally brought her the greatest success to date - in 3: 58.75 minutes she won the world championship title in the 1500 m. She defended this title at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin . In London , she first won the bronze medal in the 1500 m final at the 2012 Olympic Games , before being declared a silver medalist in 2015 following the doping disqualification and an Olympic champion in November 2017.
She is not only successful on the track , but also in road races in her adopted home Switzerland. In 2002 she set the current course record at the Hallwilerseelauf over the half marathon distance, in 2003 and 2004 she won the Basel city run as well as the Murten run , in 2004 the Swiss women's run and in 2004 and 2005 the Lucerne city run .
Maryam Yusuf Jamal lives in Frankfurt .
