Shitaye Eshete Habtegebrel (born May 21, 1990 ) is a Bahraini long-distance runner of Ethiopian origin who has been eligible to compete in Bahrain since 2009.

Career

Shitaye Eshete gained her first international experience at the 2009 Arab Championships in Damascus , where she won the silver medal in the 5000 meter run . Then she finished sixth at the Asian Championships in Guangzhou in 16: 24.91 minutes and did not take part in the 1,500 meter run for a short time. In March 2010 she was eleventh at the World Cross Country Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland and sixth at the Athletics Continental Cup in Split . In November she won the bronze medal at the Asian Games in Guangzhou in 31: 53.27 minutes in the 10,000 meter run behind the two Indian women Preeja Sreedharan and Kavita Raut . In the following year she finished twelfth at the Cross Country World Championships in Valencia and won the military world games in Rio de Janeiro over 5000 meters and the Asian Games in Kobe over 10,000 meters. So she qualified for the World Championships in Daegu , where she finished sixth in 31: 21.57 min. Then she was second over 10,000 m and third over 5000 m at the Pan-Arab Games . In 2012 she won the Asian Indoor Championships in Hangzhou over 3000 meters and was fifth in the World Indoor Championships in Istanbul in 8: 51.88 minutes. During the outdoor season, she qualified for the Olympic Games in London , where she Sixth about 10,000 meters and tenth in the 5000 meter race .

In 2013 Eshete narrowly missed a medal in fourth at the World Cross Country Championships in Bydgoszcz and again won the 10,000 meter title and silver over 5000 meter at the Asian Championships in Pune behind Betlhem Desalegn from the United Arab Emirates. Over 10,000 meters she also took part in the World Championships in Moscow and was also sixth there. At the end of September she finally won the Islamic Solidarity Games and then took a year off. In 2015 she won thirds at the Arab Championships in Manama in the 5000 and 10,000 meters and was second at the Ústi nad Lábem half marathon in 1:10:14 h. In 2016, she finished sixth in the Dubai Marathon with a time of 2:25:36 h and qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where she was unable to finish her race .

In 2017 she won the Trento half marathon and came second in the Saitama marathon. At the Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku she reached fourth place over 10,000 meters and also qualified for the World Championships in London, where she finished twelfth in 31: 38.66 minutes . In 2018 she was tenth in the Half Marathon World Championships in Valencia in 1:08:25 h. In April, the 27-year-old won the Hamburg Marathon after 2:24:51 hours and a new personal best . At the end of August she was fifth in the 10,000-meter run at the Asian Games in Jakarta in 32: 30.24 minutes. At the end of the season she finished second in the Saitama Marathon in 2:25:39 h in December .

In 2019 Eshete took part in the World Cross Country Championships in Aarhus and came 19th in the individual ranking. A good three weeks later she won the Asian Championships in Doha over 10,000 meters in 31: 15.62 minutes and thus secured her third title after 2011 and 2013. At the end of September she took part in the marathon at the World Championships in Doha and was able to run there don't quit.
