The Pan- Arabic Games ( Arabic دورة الألعاب العربية, DMG daurat al-alʿāb al-ʿarabiyya ; English Pan Arab Games or just Arab Games ) are a multi-sport event for the countries of the Arab world , organized by the Union of Arab National Olympic Committees (UANOC ; Arabic Ittihad al-lidschan al-ulimbiyya al-wataniyya al-ʿarabiyya) . They have been taking place since 1953 and were originally planned to be held every four years, but this was not adhered to. Due to political unrest and financial difficulties, the event is considered unstable. The competitions are held in the Olympic sports. Women have been allowed to participate since 1985.
Due to the conflicts in the region were Beirut ( Lebanon ) to host the Games in 2015 back, and the new venue should Rabat ( Morocco be), but due to financial concerns also Rabat withdrew. Then Egypt became interested in the event. But the games did not take place in the end, and there have been no announcements about future games.
doping
According to a study by the University of Tübingen and the Harvard Medical School , an average of 57.1 percent of the athletes at the 2011 Pan-Arab Games in Doha ( Qatar ) said they were under the influence of doping. At the World Athletics Championships in Daegu ( South Korea ) in the same year, it was at least 30 percent, but on average even between 39.4 and 47.9 percent (average: 43.6) who stated in the period of twelve months before Having doped in a competition.
The results of both events resulted from an anonymous survey among a total of 2,167 athletes; at the World Championships there were 1,202 athletes. The validity of the randomized answer technique method is scientifically recognized. In addition to the total number of doping athletes, the inefficiency of the doping controls carried out at the time cannot be overlooked, as only a fraction of the doping cases (at the World Cup it was 0.5 percent) were detected.
The scientists had argued for years about the publication of the study commissioned by the world anti-doping agency WADA . The University of Tübingen had accused the World Athletics Association IAAF of wanting to prevent publication. A detailed article on the study is published in the journal Sports Medicine .
