Starting position

As for several years, the favorites in this race were mainly runners from Africa. The 2016 Olympic champion and 2015 world champion over 5000 meters Almaz Ayana from Ethiopia were given the best chances . One of her strongest competitors was her compatriot Tirunesh Dibaba, who was world champion over 5000 meters in 2003 and in the years that followed she was multiple world champion and Olympic champion over both long-distance railways. In addition, was also to be expected of the Kenyan Olympic Fourth of 2016 Alice Aprot Nawowuna, the two US women Emily Infeld as WM -Dritter of 2015 and Molly Huddle as WM -Vierter of 2015 and the other representatives of Ethiopia and Kenya.

Race course

For four kilometers, little happened in this final - the 10,000 meter run was held without prior heats. The race was almost leisurely given the class of top runners, but it got a little faster from kilometer to kilometer. So the field remained almost closed for a long time. After four thousand meters, however, Ayana accelerated and was able to pull away alone. The pace was very fast now, the field was falling more and more into smaller groups and groups. Ayana's lead grew from lap to lap. After six thousand meters, she was seven seconds ahead of a group of five with the three Kenyans Nawowuna, Agnes Tirop and Chepet Cheptai, Dibaba and the Turkish European champion Yasemin Can. At eight kilometer the gap between Ayana's pursuers had increased to 27 seconds, Can had to let go and was even further behind. Later on, Cheptai also lost touch, so that the chasing group had shrunk to three runners one kilometer from the finish. Ayana's lead, which continued to maintain its impressive pace, was already 47 seconds.

In the last thousand meters, Nawowuna lost contact in the chasing group and fell back. So the decision about silver had to be made between Dibaba and Tirop. The sprint for the silver medal was finally won by the 32-year-old Tirunesh Dibaba, Agnes Jebet Tirop won bronze. Alice Aprot Nawowuna was fourth a little more than eight seconds behind.
