final

August 8, 2017, 9:50 p.m. local time (10:50 p.m. CEST )

The clear favorite in this race was the South African world record holder , Olympic champion and 2015 world champion Wayde van Niekerk. The US runner-up in the world championship, Olympic third in 2012 and Olympic champion in 2008 LaShawn Merritt was also among the participants here in London , but he had already been eliminated in the semifinals. In the semifinals, Steven Gardiner from Bahamas presented himself very strongly and was one of the most important competitors for van Niekerk. Nathon Allen had also put himself into the role of possible medal candidates with the second fastest semi-final time.

Isaac Makwala from Botswana, fourth fastest semi-finalist, was affected by gastroenteritis rampant at these World Championships , so the IAAF had quarantined him for the final. A few days later he got another chance over 200 meters , where he reached the final where he finished sixth.

Van Niekerk was quickly ahead in the final. He was the first to hit the home straight. Not far behind were Gardiner and Baboloki Thebe from Botswana, followed by Allen. From far back, Abdalelah Haroun from Qatar stormed past his opponents in the last eighty meters. The leading Wayde van Niekerk could no longer be caught. He defended his world title from 2015. For Steven Gardiner it was again very tight, but he too was just able to hold his own with a lead of seven hundredths of a second and won the silver medal. But third place went to Abdalelah Haroun with his strong finish ahead of Baboloki Thebe and Nathon Allen. Allen's compatriot Demish Gaye was sixth ahead of Fred Kerley, the only American in the final.
