The men's 400-meter race at the 1983 World Athletics Championships took place on August 7, 8, 9 and 10, 1983 in Helsinki , Finland .

Fifty athletes from 42 countries took part in the world championships. In this competition, the US runners won two medals, silver and bronze. World champion was the Jamaican Bert Cameron in 45.05 s. Michael Franks came second in 45.22 s and Sunder Nix came third in 45.24 s.
