The women's long jump at the 1983 World Athletics Championships took place on August 13-14, 1983 in Helsinki , Finland .

30 athletes from 24 countries took part in the competition. Heike Daute , later Heike Drechsler, from the GDR , who was at the beginning of a highly successful career, won the gold medal with 7.27 m . Silver went to the Romanian Vice European Champion from 1982 and world record holder Anișoara Cușmir with 7.15 m . The bronze medal went to the American Carol Lewis with 7.04 m.

New world championship
record : The top distances of the three medal winners were all supported by too much tailwind support. The highest maturity for the best list in this competition was 7.02 m. It was achieved in the final on August 13th by the winner Heike Daute from the GDR , later Heike Drechsler (2nd attempt), and by fourth-placed Tatjana Proskurjakowa from the Soviet Union (6th attempt).

Wind conditions

In the following summary of results, the wind conditions for the best jumps are named. The permitted limit is two meters per second. With stronger wind support, the distance will be counted for the competition, but will not be included in the lists of records and the best.

qualification

August 13, 1983

Thirty athletes competed in two groups to qualify. The qualification distance was at least 6.40 m in order to move directly into the final. Twelve athletes made this mark or jumped further, they are highlighted in light blue. Thus the number of participants planned for the final was reached, the final field did not have to be filled any further.
