The women's marathon at the 1983 World Athletics Championships took place on August 7, 1983 in Helsinki , Finland , and was played on the streets of the Finnish capital.
59 runners from 30 countries took part in the competition. The gold medal was won by the Norwegian EC - third over 1500 meters in 1974 and EC third over 3000 meters in 1978. Grete Waitz , formerly Grete Andersen, in 2:28:09 h. Silver went to the American Marianne Dickerson in 2:31:09 h, and the bronze medal was won by Raissa Smechnowa from the Soviet Union in 2:31:13 h.

Note:
At that time, records were not kept in marathon running and street walking because of the different track conditions with the exception of championship records.
