Karolina Szabó

Karolina Szabó (born November 17, 1961 in Dunaföldvár ) is a former Hungarian athlete who set two track world records in addition to her success in road running.

At 1.49 meters and 35 kilograms, Karolina Szabó, who is very petite, competed at the European Championships in Athens in 1982 , when the first marathon was on the program of European Championships. More than five minutes behind the three medal winners, she finished sixth in 2:41:51 hours. The following year she ran in 2:40:23 hours to 18th place at the World Championships in Helsinki . In 1985 Szabó reached third place at the Marathon World Cup in Hiroshima behind Katrin Dörre and Soja Iwanowa . In 1986 she set her personal best in the marathon in 2:30:31 hours. At the 1986 European Championships in Stuttgart she competed in the 10,000 meter run and finished eighth in 31: 55.93 minutes. In 1987 at the World Championships in Rome , she started again in the marathon and placed ninth in 2:36:18 hours.

On April 22, 1988 Karolina Szabó attempted a world record attempt in the 30,000 meter run at the BSHE facility in Budapest, her three opponents got out at 5000 meters, 10,000 meters and 16,800 meters. Their intermediate time over 25,000 meters of 1: 29: 29.2 hours and the end time of 1: 47: 05.6 hours over 30,000 meters each meant world records. The record over 25,000 meters was not beaten until 2002 by Tegla Loroupe , who also improved the record over 30,000 meters in 2003. Karolina Szabó first took part in the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 and finished 13th in 2:32:26 hours. At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona , she finished eleventh.

Karolina Szabó was Hungarian champion twice over 3000 meters, four times over 10,000 meters and three times in the marathon. In 1991 she won the Munich Marathon and in 1994 the San Francisco Marathon .
