Complete medal table

The 1st World Athletics Championships took place in Helsinki from August 7-14, 1983 . With the exception of marathons and walking events , the competitions were in the Olympic Stadium of 1952 discharged. 1572 athletes from 153 countries took part.

Competition mode

The world athletics federation IAAF had decided to now also host world championships, which has been the case in other sports for a very long time. In addition to the Olympic Games, there was now another great showdown of strength at world level for the athletes . A four-year cycle was initially planned for the event. Finding an optimal time was not easy, because the years in the middle between two Olympic Games were intended for the various continental championships, which were and are of great importance, the relevance of which would have been downgraded with this solution. The odd years were set as the time for the World Championships right after the Olympic Games.

However, this mode did not last long. For the two upcoming World Championships in 1987 and 1991 , the chosen variant was retained. It was then decided that in the second odd year between two Olympic Games World Athletics Championships should take place. The four-year cycle was replaced by a two-year cycle. This mode has proven itself and has become the standard for hosting World Athletics Championships.

Athletic performance

The overall level of performance was very high. With a few exceptions, the world's best track and field athletes were at the start in the various disciplines and ensured top-class times and distances.

Most successful athlete

The following athletes won at least two gold medals:

The scoring was based on the points table from 1964. For orientation and classification of the performances, the scores achieved according to the current scoring system from 1984/85 are also listed for comparison. After that, ranks seven and eight should have been swapped. However, these comparisons are only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis. At the subsequent world championships, the current valuation was used.

Comment on the championship record:
The top distances of the three medalists were all supported by too much tailwind support. The highest maturity for the best list in this competition was 7.02 m. It was achieved by the winner Heike Daute, later Heike Drechsler (final, 2nd attempt), and fourth-placed Tatjana Proskurjakowa (final, 6th attempt).

Evaluation was based on the points table from 1971. For orientation and classification of the performance, the points achieved in 1985 according to the current evaluation system are also listed. After that, ranks thirteen and fourteen should have been swapped. However, these comparisons are only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis. At the subsequent world championships, the current valuation was used.
