Dietmar Millonig

Dietmar Millonig (born June 1, 1955 in Villach ) is a former Austrian medium and long-distance runner .

Career

As early as 1973 he became Austrian champion for the first time over 1500 meters . The following year he was fourth in the junior race of the World Cross Country Championships . In 1978 he won the Bozen New Year's Eve run , and the following year he was the first Austrian to stay under four minutes in the mile run .

At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, Millonig was sixth over 5000 meters . A fifth place over the same distance at the European Athletics Championships in 1982 in Athens was followed by an eighth at the 1983 World Athletics Championships in Helsinki. The following year he was absent from the Olympic Games in Los Angeles due to injury, but won the Zurich New Year's Eve run .

In 1986 he won gold over 3000 meters at the European Indoor Championships in Madrid . At the end of the season, like in 1983, he won the Natternbach New Year's Eve run . At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, he was eliminated over 5000 meters in the preliminary run, and at the European Championships in 1990 in Split, he was eleventh over 10,000 meters .

Millonig won four national championship titles over 1500, twelve over 5000, eight over 10,000 meters, six in cross-country and two in 25-km road running . He was once a master at 1500 and 3000 meters in the hall. He set Austrian records over 1500 meters (once outdoors and twice in the hall), over 3000 meters (four times in the open, three times in the hall), over 5000 meters (six times in the open) and over 10,000 meters (three times).

Millonig is 1.69 m tall and weighed 57 kg at competition times. He was by his older brother Millonig Hubert trained and launched for the ASKÖ Villach, the SV Schwechat, the LC Carinthia, the LC Lusthaus and the LU Schaumann. In 1993 he ended his competitive sports career and moved to management at Nike , for which he is responsible for marketing in Austria, Slovenia and Croatia. He has been married since 1995 and has two daughters. Daughter Julia (* 1995) is also a track and field athlete in the obstacle course / steeplechase and competes for ULC Riverside Mödling . Starting for the same club, daughter Lena (* 1998) became Vice State Champion in the 10 km road race in 2017.
