Mark Carroll

Mark Carroll (born January 15, 1972 in Knocknaheeney , Cork ) is a retired Irish long-distance runner .

In 1995 he won the 5000 m as a student at Providence College at the NCAA Indoor Championships and was twelfth at the World Athletics Championships in Gothenburg . Over the same distance he was eliminated from the 1997 World Championships in Athens, won bronze at the 1998 European Athletics Championships in Budapest and came 14th at the 1999 World Championships in Seville.

In 2000 he won gold over 3000 m at the European Indoor Championships in Ghent , but did not get past the lead at the Olympic Games in Sydney .

In 2001 he was seventh over 3000 m at the World Indoor Championships in Lisbon and failed again in the first round at the World Championships in Edmonton over 5000 m.

The following year he was sixth over 5000 m at the European Championships in Munich . In the fall, he won the New York Grete’s Great Gallop Half Marathon and finished sixth in the New York City Marathon .

In 2004 he retired at the Olympic Games in Athens over 5000 m in the preliminary run. In 2005 he finished fifth at the Great North Run , and in 2006 he won the Canton Homecoming Road Race.

At the World Cross Country Championships in 1999 in Belfast he finished 21st on the short distance and in 2002 in Dublin on the 48th place on the long distance.

Three times he was Irish champion over 1500 m (1995, 1999, 2002) and five times over 5000 m (1999-2002, 2004).

Mark Carroll is currently the Director of Cross Country Skiing at Drake University in Des Moines . He has been married to American long-distance runner Amy Rudolph since 2005 .
