Gennaro Di Napoli

Gennaro Di Napoli (born March 5, 1968 in Naples ) is a former Italian middle and long distance runner .

Life

The athlete, who was born in Naples but grew up in Lombardy, was world-class in the 1,500-meter and 3,000-meter races. Although Di Napoli was not a pure indoor specialist, he achieved his greatest successes in the hall with the world championship titles in 1993 and 1995.

The 1987 European Junior Champion over 1500 meters was eliminated in the semifinals of the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul . At the European Championships in Split in 1990 he only had to admit defeat to Jens-Peter Herold from the GDR in the final sprint and won silver in 3: 38.60 minutes. At the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo , Di Napoli finished eighth in 3: 36.56 minutes.

In 1992 he won the 3000 meters at the European Indoor Championships in Genoa in 7: 47.27 minutes ahead of the British John Mayock in 7: 48.47 minutes. At the Olympic Games in Barcelona he was eliminated in the semifinals over 1500 meters as in 1988. At the World Indoor Championships in Toronto in 1993 , he won gold over 3000 meters. In 7: 50.26 min he was just ahead of the Frenchman Éric Dubus in 7: 50.57 min. In Stuttgart at the 1993 World Championships , Di Napoli reached the final, but was knocked off twelfth and last.

The following year Di Napoli was ninth in 3: 39.96 minutes at the European Championships in Helsinki . He celebrated his second victory at the World Indoor Championships in Toronto in 1995 . In 7: 50.89 min he won the sprint ahead of the Spaniard Anacleto Jiménez (7: 50.98 min). In the same year he was eleventh over 5000 meters at the World Championships in Gothenburg .

In 1996 in Atlanta , Di Napoli reached the Olympic final over 5000 meters and was twelfth. At the World Indoor Championships in Paris in 1997 , he finished fourth in 7: 41.05 min. Two years later at the World Indoor Championships in Maebashi in 1999 he was fourth again, this time in 7: 55.60 minutes.

At the European Athletics Cup, Gennaro Di Napoli won the 5000 meters in 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1999.

Gennaro Di Napoli is 1.85 m tall and weighed 61 kg during his playing days.
