In 2017, like two years earlier, he missed a medal at the World Championships in London as fourth .
At the 2018 World Indoor Championships in Birmingham , he repeated Portland's success and won the gold medal in the 3,000-meter run.
On March 3, 2019, Kejelcha set a new indoor world record in Boston. With a time of 3: 47.01 min, he was well below the 22-year-old record of the Moroccan Hicham El-Guerrouj (3: 48.45 min).
