Life

Dominance in the youth and junior sector

Kejelcha celebrated his first international title win as a 15-year-old at the 2013 World Youth Athletics Championships in Donetsk, where he won the 3000 meter race. The following year he won gold medals in the 5000-meter run at the Junior World Championships in Eugene and in the 3000-meter run at the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing , which he won his third major championship final within thirteen months. He was also victorious over 5000 meters at the 2015 Junior African Championships in Addis Ababa.

Rise to the top of the world

In the 2015 season Kejelcha established itself among the absolute best in the world. He won the 5000 meter races at the Prefontaine Classic and the Golden Gala in Rome. He also took second place at the Athletissima in Lausanne. As the leader in the world annual best list, he traveled to the world championships in Beijing as one of the favorites . In the tactical, slow 5000 meter final, however, he was left behind in the final sprint and was only fourth behind Mo Farah , Caleb Ndiku and Hagos Gebrhiwet . Kejelcha finished the season with a victory over 5000 meters at the Memorial Van Damme in Brussels in a new personal best of 12: 53.98 min. With that he won the IAAF Diamond League overall ranking in his discipline.

Kejelcha won the gold medal in the 3000 meter run at the 2016 World Indoor Championships in Portland . Despite solid results in the outdoor season, he was not nominated by the national association for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. At the end of August he won the 3000 meter race at the Meeting de Paris and achieved a new junior world record with a time of 7: 28.19 minutes and a world best for the year.

In 2017, like two years earlier, he missed a medal at the World Championships in London as fourth .

At the 2018 World Indoor Championships in Birmingham , he repeated Portland's success and won the gold medal in the 3,000-meter run.

On March 3, 2019, Kejelcha set a new indoor world record in Boston. With a time of 3: 47.01 min, he was well below the 22-year-old record of the Moroccan Hicham El-Guerrouj (3: 48.45 min). At the World Championships in Doha in October, he won a personal best of 26: 49.34 minutes. the silver medal over 10,000 m.
