Golden Gala

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Golden Gala is an annual athletics meeting held in the Olympic Stadium in Rome . It belongs to the IAAF Diamond League .

The Golden Gala has been taking place since 1980. At that time it was held on the initiative of the future Italian IAAF President Primo Nebiolo in order to offer a strong competition to the athletes of the NATO countries at the time, which boycotted the Olympic Games in Moscow .

World records

Several world records have already been set at the Golden Gala, but only one of them is still in existence. On July 7, 1999, Hicham El Guerrouj ran the mile in 3: 43.13 minutes. A year earlier, El Guerrouj set a second world record over 1500 meters .

The French Thierry Vigneron also managed the feat of setting a world record in Rome two years in a row. In 1983 he jumped 5.83 m in the pole vault and thus held the world record until May 1984. Serhiy Bubka beat the world record that he set in 1984 by three centimeters in the same competition.
