Jelena Wladimirowna Slessarenko ( Russian Елена Владимировна Слесаренко , English transcription Yelena Slesarenko , née Siwuschenko ; born February 28, 1982 in Volgograd ) is a Russian high jumper and Olympic champion .

Career

In 2003 she won bronze at the Universiade and in 2004 she made her breakthrough to the top of the world. At the World Indoor Championships in Budapest , she won the title with a height of 2.04 m. During the Golden League meetings before the Olympic Games in Athens , she became the main competitor of Hestrie Cloete (South Africa), who had become world champion in 2003. Still beaten by Cloete at the meeting in Rome , she was finally able to overtake the favorite Cloete in Athens this season and became Olympic champion with an Olympic record and personal best of 2.06 m. Only when she reached the world record height of 2.10 m, which she had set up, was it over.

The following year she was suspended because of injuries. At the World Indoor Championships in Moscow , she defended her title with 2.02 m, but only came in fifth at the European Championships in 2006 in a high-class final with 1.99 m.

She finished fourth at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka and silver at the 2008 World Indoor Championships in Valencia.

In 2011 she reached fourth place at the World Championships .

Jelena Slessarenko is 1.78 m tall and has a competition weight of 58 kg.

At the Olympic Games 2008 in Beijing she reached the fourth place. Due to the subsequent disqualification of the bronze medalist Anna Tschitscherowa , she was awarded the bronze medal in October 2016. In further follow-up tests for the games in Beijing in November 2016, she was also convicted of doping with Turinabol and disqualified.
