A pack of 20 cost 2.00 marks , a pack of 10 costs equivalent to 1.00 marks, and a pack of 5 cost 50 pfennigs . Turf was available in dark green packaging with white lettering and in white packaging with green lettering.
A popular expression at the time in connection with this brand of cigarettes was: "Do you see the graves in that valley - these are the smokers from Turf and Real." The brand name Turf also became an abbreviation for " Thuringia under Russian thumb" or outside Thuringia "Daily under Russian thumb" reinterpreted.
