The 17th IAAF World Indoor Championships took place from March 1st to 4th, 2018 in Birmingham , United Kingdom .
The British city was awarded the IAAF contract in 2013 . She had applied for the 2016 indoor world championships , but because IAAF events were planned in Great Britain in 2016 (half marathon) and 2017 (outdoor world championships), the American city of Portland was preferred and Birmingham was designated as the venue for the indoor world championships for 2018.
The competitions took place in the 8,000-seat Birmingham Arena , where the 2003 World Indoor Championships were held. Around 400 athletes from 150 nations were expected. According to the preliminary start list, a total of 632 athletes, 334 men and 298 women, from 144 countries competed.

A total of 632 athletes, 334 men and 298 women, from 144 nations took part.
- : The German Athletics Association (DLV) nominated 12 female and 11 male athletes. Furthermore, Malaika Mihambo and Marc Reuther were invited by the IAAF World Athletics Association based on the ranking process. However, Reuther had to because of a flu infection cancel, and Sosthene Moguenara moved for Alexandra Westerwelle after that could not start because of muscular problems.
- : The Austrian Athletics Association nominated four athletes, one man and three women.
- : The Swiss Athletics , the umbrella organization for all athletics clubs in Switzerland, nominated one man and five women for the competitions.

Subsequent award of medals
After the disqualifications of doping offenders , Joachim Olsen , Ralf Bartels , Tianna Bartoletta , Concepción Montaner , Marija Šestak and Hyleas Fountain received their medals from past indoor world championships in a ceremonial act. Were prevented Naide Gomes , Li Meiju , Misleydis González , Olga Rypakowa , Valerie Adams , Nadine Kleinert and Michelle Carter . The Czech 4 x 400 meter relay from 2010 will be awarded its medals at the IAAF Continental Cup in Ostrava in September 2018.
