Hugues Fabrice Zango (born June 25, 1993 in Ouagadougou ) is a Burkinabe track and field athlete who specializes in the triple jump . In 2019 he won the bronze medal at the World Championships in Doha with an African record, the first World Cup medal for his West African homeland.
Athletic career
Hugues Fabrice Zango has been competing in triple jump competitions since 2012. In 2013, he took part in the Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia , as a student at Artois University in Arras . There he qualified for the final with 15.74 m, in which he finished sixth with an increase and a new personal best of 15.96 m. In 2014 he did not enter competitions. A year later he took part in the Universiade in Gwangju in long and triple jump. In the long jump he missed the qualification for the final, in the triple jump, however, he won the silver medal with 16.76 m. In September he finished 5th at the Africa Games in Brazzaville.
In 2016 Zango took part in the African Championships in Durban. There he won the silver medal with a width of 16.81 m in the final. In August he took part in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. There he failed, however, with 15.99 m in the qualification. In 2017 he again won the silver medal at the Universiade in Taipei. With 16.97 m he again improved his personal best.
In March 2018, Zango took part in the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham. With 17.11 m he was sixth. He jumped this distance at the African Championships in Asaba, through which he became African champion. With the 4-ma-100-meter relay he was also eighth. 2019 was his most successful sporting year so far. In January he jumped a new African record in the hall with 17.58 m. In August he won the Africa Games in Rabat. In October he jumped a new African record in the final of the World Championships in Doha with 17.66 m in the open air and also won the bronze medal, which was the first world championship medal for an athlete from his home country.
Zango lives in Arras, where he is trained by former French triple jump world champion Teddy Tamgho .
