The 2017 Summer Universiade athletics competitions were held from August 23-28, 2017 at the Taipei Municipal Stadium . The competitions were divided into four sections: running competitions, jumping and throwing competitions, street racing and walking.

All 26 German athletes (16 women, 10 men) attended the opening ceremony, including nine participants in the World Athletics Championships in London . This was the largest team the German team had been with for years. The defending champion was shot putter Lena Urbaniak and 3,000-meter obstacle runner Martin Grau .

The Swiss University Sports Association (SHSV) had 20 athletes (eight women, twelve men). The Austrian Athletics Association (ÖLV) sent seven athletes (four women and three men). The Luxembourg Athletics Federation (FLA) selected four athletes (two women and two men). The Liechtenstein University Sports Association (LHSV) did not set up any athletes.

Since the Russian Student Sports Union (RSSU) was unable to reach an agreement with the World Athletics Federation ( IAAF ) in time, no Russian athletes took part in the Universiade in Taipei .
