Andrei Marius Gag (born April 27, 1991 in Chișineu-Criș ) is a Romanian shot putter who also took part in the discus throw at the beginning of his career .

Athletic career

Andrei Gag gained his first international experience in 2008 at the Junior World Championships in Bydgoszcz , Poland , where he was eliminated from the qualification with a width of 46.98 m in the discus throw. The following year he reached the final at the Junior European Championships in Novi Sad , where he finished tenth with 55.84 m. In 2010 he won the silver medal at the Junior World Championships in Moncton with 61.85 m and in 2011 she was eliminated from the qualification at the U23 European Championships in Ostrava with 54.83 m. Even two years later he did not reach the final at the U23 European Championships in Tampere with 55.98 m and then took fifth place at the Francophonie Games in Nice with a throw of 55.60 m.

Since 2014, Gag has been starting more of the shot put and qualified straight away for the European Championships in Zurich , where he did not reach the final with 19.18 m. The following year he was eliminated from the qualification at the European Indoor Championships in Prague with 18.45 m, but subsequently won the silver medal behind Indian Inderjeet Singh at the Summer Universiade in Gwangju with 19.35 m . He also took part in the World Championships in Beijing for the first time, but retired with 19.74 m in qualification . In 2016, Gag surprisingly won the silver medal behind New Zealander Tomas Walsh with 20.89 m at the World Indoor Championships in Portland . At the beginning of July he retired at the European Championships in Amsterdam with 19.49 m in qualification and at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro he did not reach the final with 20.40 m .

In 2017 he was eliminated from the qualification at the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade with 19.24 m and at the World Championships in London he reached the final , in which he finished twelfth with 19.96 m. Only two weeks later he won the bronze medal at the Student World Games in Taipei with 20.12 m behind the Portuguese Francisco Belo and Konrad Bukowiecki from Poland. In 2018 he was eliminated from the qualification at the European Championships in Berlin with 19.26 m, as well as at the 2019 European Indoor Championships in Glasgow with 19.70 m. Even at the World Championships in Doha he could not work his way up for the final with 20.50 m .

From 2013 to 2019 Gag was the Romanian champion in the shot put and in 2014 also in the discus throw. In the hall, he secured the shot put title from 2014 to 2019.
