Complete medal table |
The 15th World Athletics Championships took place from August 22 to 30, 2015 in the National Stadium in Beijing . On November 20, 2010 Beijing won the World Championships after London withdrew its application and the Chinese capital was the only applicant.
Stadion
The World Championships took place in the National Stadium in Beijing . The stadium, which was built for the 2008 Olympic Games , had a capacity of 80,000 spectators, but the top of the three tiers was not used during the games, so that there was space for 54,000 spectators. During the games, the organizing committee relied on a concept of short distances, both between training facilities and between accommodation options for athletes and officials. The national stadium and the training stadium could be reached from all hotels in 30 minutes at the latest, and the distance between the national stadium and the training center took around 45 minutes.
Participating Nations
1935 athletes from 207 nations took part in the world championships. Most of the athletes were the United States of America with 158 participants, followed by China with 83 athletes, Russia (69), Germany (66) and Great Britain (64).

Athletic performance
The results of these world championships a year before the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro were at the usual high level of athletics world championships. There was a world record that the American Ashton Eaton set with 9045 points in the decathlon . In addition, viewers saw eight continental records, four other world championship records and 24 national records.
The Jamaican Usain Bolt won three gold medals , like at the last World Championships in 2013 - 100 meters , 200 meters and 4-by-100-meter relay . The Briton Mo Farah became the second consecutive double winner on the long distances over 5000 and 10,000 meters . It was already his third world championship gold medal over 5000 meters. The Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce was also two-time world champion with her victories over 100 meters and in the 4 x 100 meter relay. Outstanding were also u. a. Christian Taylor's triple jump performance with 18.21 m, Julius Yego's javelin throw with 92.72 m, Almaz Ayana's 5000 meter run in 14: 26.83 min and the hammer throw by Anita Włodarczyk with 80.85 m.
In the medal standings, Kenya was at the front for the first time this year , followed by Jamaica - like Kenya with seven World Cup titles. The USA had to be content with six gold medals behind these two nations. Russia , which was used to success at previous world championships, ended up this time with only two victories behind. This loss of success can certainly be seen in the context of the devastating doping problem in Russia.
doping
After positive doping tests , two Kenyans were suspended from the world championships by the IAAF .
- Joy Nakhumicha Sakari - 400 meter run . She had set a new national record in advance.
- Koki Manunga - 400 meter hurdles
According to an ARD report, the doping control system of the extremely successful country Kenya had come under heavy criticism. The Kenyan athletes' very successful performance at these World Championships cannot be seen without this connection. The massive credibility problems faced by athletics in the area of the use of prohibited means to improve performance were thus considerably increased.
There were also seven other doping cases:
- Three athletes from Morocco were affected:
- Nader Belhanbel - 800 meter run , initially seventh. He was convicted of taking banned substances during follow-up checks in 2017 and subsequently disqualified.
- Yassine Bensghir - 1,500 meter run , eliminated in the semifinals. The IAAF announced in July 2016 that he would be banned for four years due to irregularities in his biological passport. His results, achieved since July 7, 2014, have been canceled and the suspension ends on April 11, 2020.
- Othmane el-Goumri - 5000 meter run , eliminated in the preliminary run. The IAAF banned him for two years from July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2018 due to irregularities in his biological passport. His results, which he had achieved since August 11, 2013, have been canceled.
- The following further disqualifications occurred:
- Alexander Jargunkin ( Russia ) - 50 km walk . He was suspended by the Russian anti-doping agency RUSADA the day before his start after a positive EPO test.
- Jekaterina Dosseikina ( Russia ) - 3000 meter obstacle course . The runner who was eliminated in the preliminary round was suspended for four years after a positive doping test , and her result at these world championships was annulled.
- Tosin Adeloye ( Nigeria ) - 4 x 400 meter relay . Their disqualification meant that the entire Nigerian relay team, which had finished fifth, was disqualified and excluded from participation in the 2016 Olympic Games .
- Olena Shumkina ( Ukraine ) - 20 km walk . She was banned for three years because of the values in her biological passport. All results since May 2011 have been canceled, affecting their results at three World Championships and the 2012 Olympic Games .
