Jeffery Gibson (born August 15, 1990 in Freeport ) is a Bahamian hurdler who specializes in the 400 meter distance .

Athletic career

Jeffery Gibson gained his first international experience at the CARIFTA Games 2006 in Les Abymes , where he took seventh place over 400 meters and won the bronze medal with the Bahamian 4 x 400 meter relay. In 2007 he took part in the World Youth Championships in Ostrava over 400 meters and was eliminated there with 48.86 s in the semifinals. In 2008 he won the bronze medal with the relay at the CARIFTA Games in Basseterre and took sixth place in the individual competition. Over 400 meter hurdles he took part in the Junior World Championships in Bydgoszcz and was eliminated there in the first round. With the Bahamian relay he finished seventh in the final in 3: 21.75 minutes.

Two years later Gibson finished seventh in the U23 NACAC championships in Miramar and retired in the first round of the Central American and Caribbean Championships in Mayagüez . In 2012 he won the gold medal in the hurdles at the U23 NACAC championships in Irapuato, as well as silver with the relay and bronze over the flat distance. In 2013 he won silver over the hurdles and with the relay at the Central American and Caribbean Championships in Morelia in 2013 and reached the semifinals at the World Championships in Moscow . At the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow , he won the bronze medal for 48.78 s. He then won the gold medal at the Pan American Sports Festival in Mexico City .

In 2015 he won the Pan-American Games in Toronto with 48.51 s ahead of the Puerto Rican Javier Culson and finished fourth in the 4 x 400 meter relay. He qualified again for the World Championships in Beijing , where he won the bronze medal with a new national record of 48.17 s in the final . In 2016 he qualified for the first time for the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro , where he was eliminated with 52.77 s in the first round . Two years later he won the silver medal behind Kyron McMaster from the British Virgin Islands at the Commonwealth Games in the Australian Gold Coast in 49.10 s .

Gibson was Bahamian champion in the 400-meter hurdles between 2013 and 2017. He is a graduate of Oral Roberts University in Tulsa .
