final

August 18, 2016, 12 noon

Two Kenyans and one participant each from Estonia, Ireland, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Turkey and the USA qualified for the final.

The competition suffered from the absence of several top peoples. The 2004 and 2012 Olympic champion Félix Sánchez from the Dominican Republic was absent , as was the leader of the world's best list of the year, Johnny Dutch from the USA, who had failed in the US trials. Vice World Champion Denis Kudrjawzew from Russia was not at the start due to the ban on Russian athletes by the IAAF . The reigning world champion Nicholas Bett from the USA was also disqualified in the run-up. The silver medalist of the last games, Bett's compatriot Michael Tinsley, did not qualify for the final either. The favorite role now fell mainly to the Puerto Rican Javier Culson, bronze medalist at the 2012 Games in London . But Kerron Clement, the US Olympic champion in 2008 , was also strong.

Culson made a false start and was then disqualified. The second attempt to start worked, the Turk Yasmani Copello was in the front at the first hurdle. By the third hurdle, Clement, Kenyan Boniface Tumuti and Jamaican Annsert Whyte had caught up with Copello. Clement was now in the lead, directly followed by Whyte, with Tumuti behind. At the ninth hurdle Tumuti caught up with Whyte and passed him. The leading Clement could not be taken away from the victory and relegated the strongly emerging Tumuti to second place. Third was Copello, who was still able to intercept the declining Whyte.

Despite the lack of top-class athletes, the level of this final was high, four national records were set.

In the 26th Olympic final of this discipline, Kerron Clement ran for the United States' nineteenth victory. The Kenyan Boniface Tumuti and the Turk Yasmani Copello were the first medal winners in their countries over 400 meter hurdles .
